A Good Week

I don't know what's changed this week but someone's been in a MUCH better mood and I can't tell if it's me, Charlie or both. Aside from a few screaming hiccups here and there, Charlie has been the picture of well-behaved preciousness this week. He must have read my last post about him. He's also been a little under-the-weather so maybe he just doesn't have the energy to fight me on everything. OR maybe I've just had more patience, making me a better mom, making him a better kid. I've been praying a lot lately for just that so maybe my prayers have been answered. Maybe it's just a placebo effect. In any case, I'm just happy. This week Charlie told me I'm his "best in the whole world." I tell him this all the time (I also tell Andy this -- shhhhh!) but this is the first time he's reciprocated. The best what? The best everything. Plain and simple.

** EDIT** The streak ended at naptime this afternoon when Charlie threw the mother of all fits, ending with me stripping his room of all toys and books. He was screaming so loud that I had to text my neighbor (remember, we live in a townhouse) to apologize for the noise and assure her that no one was dying. Oh well...

Since Charlie's been sick with this random fever and nighttime cough mess that's been going around, he's needed some extra snuggles. Every night he's come to our room between the hours of 2:30 - 4:00 wanting to crawl in our bed and be awake. Not ok. It broke our hearts to put sick Charlie back in his bed and hear him whimper but I rarely compromise when it comes to my sleep. We've never wanted a king-sized bed because we like to snuggle, but I'm seriously considering getting one when we move back to TX. I just feel like there should be enough room for a sick or scared kid to sleep between us once in a while. Poor Charlie. So it brings me to ask -- how do you feel about kids in your bed?

The other day Charlie and I were coming out of CVS when I saw this sweet firetruck parked in front of Kroger. Needless to say we definitely had to take a walk to see it. As we were standing by the truck gawking one of the firefighters got out and asked Charlie if he wanted to get inside. He did, so I stuck him up there but then he just cried. Apparently it's a brand new truck and it was all shiny and awesome. I wanted to climb in too but Charlie wasn't havin' it.

See that coat and hat Charlie's wearing? I got the coat at a consignment sale before he was even born -- Baby Gap, $10. That hat I got for $7 off a Nepalese street vendor. I love both. I mean, the coat and the hat -- not the Nepalese guy.

Last night some of us from the 'hood got together for burgers and game night (thanks Taylors!!). We played a game called Telephone Pictionary. Has anyone ever played this? It's my new favorite party game! It's the same concept as the telephone game (whisper a message from person to person and see how messed up it is at the end) but with written phrases and drawings. Here's how we played it:

1. Every player starts with a stack of paper equal to the number of players. We had nine, so each person started with nine pieces of paper.

2. At the same time, each person writes a phrase on his/her top piece of paper. The more random, the better. Some of the ones that came up last night: "People making out", "Banana in pajamas", "Attack of the giant pickle", "You're America's next top model."

3. Then everyone passes their stack to the right. Each person reads what is written, puts that paper on the back of the stack and draws what he/she read.

4. Everyone passes to the right again. Then each person looks at the drawing, moves it to the back of the stack and writes what she/he thinks the picture is portraying.

5. This continues until the stacks are passed enough such that they return to the original people. Then it's fun to go around and reveal what each stack holds. The progression of drawings and phrases is hilarious! Thanks, Taylors for teaching it to us!

Never leave your shoes and a 64 box of crayons in the same room with Charlie.

Lastly, here's my newest bargain purchase. It's a pair of amazing New Balance running shoes. They retail for $85 - 100, but I got them for $25 at www.joesnewbalanceoutlet.com. It pays to wear a 6.5 narrow!

As always, love reading your blog! Payton is shaping up to be kinda like Charlie is sounding! :) We have a king bed but generally don't have kids in it. Only on very special occasions....like when daddy's out of town Preston and I have slumber parties in my bed! Our bed is pretty sacred just for us, but sick or scared kids will get priviledges from time to time.....as long as it's very rare! :)

I love the picture of him crying at the firetruck. I won't show Cody though.

Carley isn't allowed to get out of her bed without us so she calls over the monitor if she wants to come to our room and then we decided depending on what time it is. I just worry about her walking around the house without us knowing it in the dark. I am a worrier though, so there you go

The edit was hilarious. Before I even read about the coat, I totally noticed it! Very handsome. Claire has the same kind of sickness going on. You can't escape it!

As for the whole sleep thing-I will never allow my kids in my bed-ever! If later down the road they have a nightmare-they can sleep by my bed on the floor.

I definitely think you should let sick Charlie sleep with you. I would let him sleep with me. I don't know if I'd let Riley do it. :) I may sleep on the twin bed in her room though just so she has the comfort of knowing I'm there.

I LOVE the expression on Charlie's face in the crayon picture. Priceless. I think you'll be seeing that "What?" look a lot.

I don't know where to begin...I'm so sad to hear Charlie is sick. I'm glad my kids haven't got it...yet!

As for the kids in bed-never! Mark and I decided when we got married that we were not all about a family bed and that it only takes one time for a child to get hooked. When our kids have been sick we've let them sleep on the floor in our room, or us on the floor in theirs, but never in our bed. I've had too many friends who have 3 kids sleeping with them at night at different times in the night. How do you sleep with all of that going on?!

I don't think your kids sleeping with you is the end of the world as long as they sleep. After the baby was born Jacob started getting out of bed every night. We battled him for awhile. I was still getting up with the baby every 2-3 hours, and Jason was continually taking Jacob back to bed up to 3 times at night. It was awful. We ended up making a place for him to sleep on the floor. Johnny (who is now 7 months old), has just recently started sleeping through the night. Before this, it made it really hard for us to ever be that consistent with Jacob on getting in our bed. We did let him as long as he slept. This usually happened between the hours of 2 and 4. We try to put him back in his bed once he falls back asleep. The adjustment to lack of sleep when you have two is a lot harder then just one. That's my opinion. We were never getting any sleep and something just had to give. I think every situation is unique. Jacob's been transitioning out of his 3 hour naps to much shorter naps, plus he's getting his 2 year molars. There has been A LOT of change going on in the O'Quinn house. :) It just made sense. Of course, now that things are starting to fall into place a little bit more, Jacob is sleeping in his own bed all night.

Love the pics of Charlie, and I love hearing about bargains!
