The things you learn...
Last week my parents were at our house visiting when my dad decided to scare us and do some strange seizing in his sleep. To make a long story short, I spent four days on the road and in the hospital with my parents to help get things taken care of. No worries -- Dad will be fine, but I'm not sure that I will be after the things I heard and saw over the last four days. Here's a rundown in no particular order:
1. There's an old vet on the third floor of the VA Hospital in Temple, TX that has a strong objection to wearing clothes. I was visually accosted everytime I walked down the hall. I think I saw more of that guy in the last three days than I have of Andy in the last month.
2. My mom considers herself somewhat of a caesar salad connoisseur. She swears that the best caesar salad dressing that she's ever had is at Dairy Queen.
3. Speaking of Dairy Queen, my parents have deemed the Slaton, TX Dairy Queen to have the nicest tables they've ever seen in a restaurant. Ever been there? Then you understand my confusion.
4. My mom loves dollar stores. We hunted Dollar Generals all over Temple for some books she was looking for. Dollar General's not her favorite, though. She really loves King Dollar in Brenham, TX and has mentioned several times that I need to go there. I'm partial to Dollar Tree, myself.
5. My mom called me a spoiled doctor's wife for getting us a room at the Hilton Garden Inn instead of a motor lodge. It was 9:00 at night and I was by myself. I just looked for the nearest motel with doors on the inside. Sue me.
6. My dad has some of the corniest comments and jokes I've ever heard, but may be one of the nicest people on the face of the planet.
7. My mom is crazy and quirky in more ways than I can count, but she has unlimited patience and compassion.
8. Because of 6 & 7, it's a good thing I was there so I could be the one to bring the hammer down when needed.
9. I'm not very good at bringing the hammer down.
10. Charlie's been bringing the hammer down on me ever since I arrived at my sister's house.
Being a grown-up is hard.
