I'd like your thoughts on this one...
Do you think cavemen really existed? I ask because I think they did. I've always thought so and I still do. I had NO IDEA that this was part of the anti-evolution debate. I just recently came across this thanks to a few elementary kids. Here's my deal with the whole debate on evolution: Does it really matter? Is it any less divine if God formed the world, humans included, over millions of years than if it happened the way it's told in Genesis? Now, before you start heading for my house with torches and stones screaming "BLASPHEMY!!", let me make this clear: I believe the Bible is the Word of God. Always have, always will. I believe it was guided by Him, breathed by Him, and what I read today has been guarded by Him. I also believe that God created us in His own image, as intelligent beings, capable of choice, creativity, discernment, and intellectual thought. Now, I am by no means a biblical scholar. I try to live my life (although I often fail) according to the example of Jesus. That's pretty much it. I don't have much use for legalistic rhetoric or a list of rules about how I should act as a Christian. Don't get me wrong -- I have rules. Lots of them. They keep me moral, ethical, and out of trouble. I'm just saying that I think there's more than one way to be a "good Christian." I don't think we all have to worship the same way, take communion the same way, or even think the same way. One of the arguments that I don't get is this stuff about following the Bible exactly as it is written and not adding to or taking away from it's words. Here's where it gets cloudy for me. If we are supposed to approach the Bible that way, then why did Jesus teach mainly through actions and parables? It seems like most of His ministry was meant to be interpreted. It was meant to be added to and taken away from. It was meant to be applied to the time and culture in which it was being read and applied. Call me an idiot, but I just don't get it. Ok, I could go on and on. I'll just stop here though. Seriously, I really would like your thoughts. Even if you have never commented on here before, feel free to weigh in. I mean it. Just keep it academic and don't get mean, ok?
Phew...now that that's over...I apologize for being a pathetic excuse for a blogger. I'd love to say that I've been consumed with preparations for the move, but the truth is that while I have had time to blog I haven't. Why? Because I'm completely addicted to reading every word on the blog Confessions of a Pioneer Woman. I know a lot of you are fans of her cooking website, and now that I've made her roast & lasagna recipes I'm a changed woman. BUT if you haven't taken the time to check out her personal blog you have to. If you really want to jump right in start with the section "Black Heels to Tractor Wheels." It's about how she and her husband met and married. It's addicting. You won't be able to stop reading. You'll be emailing her for more installments. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Well, Charlie's really keeping me going these days. He's really embraced being two. I am happy to report that we are PACIFIER FREE!! That's another reason for my lack of blogging. It's been a rough week. It's worth it though.
Saturday night Andy and I began painting our bedroom. We moved everything out, put up primer, then decided that it was too late to finish so we called it a night. The problem was that I couldn't get into my closet to get a clean t-shirt. I really needed one because I still had stuff to do but needed to change out of my painting clothes. What to do? Just then I remembered that there was a t-shirt of mine in Charlie's closet. It was in there because someone gave it to me when I was pregnant and it is no longer appropriate so I just stashed it with all the baby stuff. Anyway, I pulled it out and changed and went to talk to Andy while he was engrossed in something on TV. He started to tell me about what he was watching and then glanced at my shirt and started to stutter. My reaction: "Chill out. I just needed a clean shirt. I'm not trying to tell you anything." I thought he almost had a stroke. And then I laughed really hard at his fear. Here's the shirt:

No, I'm not pregnant. Nor do I have plans to become so in the near future. Charlie's quite enough to handle at this point.
Here's a random pic of Charlie using a mini shopping cart at the grocery store last night. I just needed a few things so I let him push this around. He was in heaven. Of course I had to guide it everywhere to keep him from destroying the store but it was fun. Sorry for the pic--I took it with my phone. Speaking of my phone, I set the ringtone as Timbaland / One Republic's "Apologize." I thought this was perfectly acceptable ('cause I LOVE it) until yesterday morning after praise team practice when we were circled up praying and it went off. That was awkward.

Hey Amy... Haven't commented in awhile, but had to chime in hear. Let me just tell you I agree with you completely! I'm not sure if the world was created in 6 days or one million, but what I am sure of is who the Creator was. I feel like we miss the point of Him being the Creator and us being the created and that beautiful relationship when we get all hung on the "logistics" of it all. Have you ever noticed that Genesis chapter one and two are basically two different accounts of the creation story? I, personally, don't think God's point was on what number day he did what, but that He did it. For us. And Adam and Eve? I'm not saying they didn't exsist (although I'm not saying they did either), but I think the point of that story was to show that God created us and to show us an example of our free will, of our fallen lives and of how Satan interacts with us. We learn best through stories (and parables, too) and what better a story to demonstrate creation and the fall of man that what God beautifully inspired in Genesis.
Just my two cents...
Jenny
Great post. I agree with you on the cavemen question. I think we can argue until we are blue in the face about issues like that, while there are people who are starving, sick, orphaned, needing to hear about Jesus (etc. etc.) that we should be reaching out to instead. Not that pondering these issues isn't important, but it can make me a little crazy when I think about it too much--especially since the CofC is notorious for taking discussions like this to the extreme.
Also, that's hilarious about (1) the t-shirt and (2) "Apologize" going off during the prayer. Who was the first person who told you it was too late to apologize after you said sorry?
I'm with you on the legalistic way we try to live as Christians. We spend too much time arguing on what's right and wrong with the different churches when all Jesus wants us to do is go out and tell people about Him. Instead we are inside arguing with each other over petty issues.
I happen to believe that God did create the earth in 6 whole days and that there weren't cavemen. If there were then Adam and Eve wouldn't have been man and woman and named all the animals. But that's just me. I'm totally cool with you thinking differently and still consider you a sister in Christ!!! I love hearing other people's views on stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for responding, Jennifer. I was hoping that someone with a different viewpoint than mine would comment!
