Luxury...

I've always wanted a house with a pool and today it finally happened. It's a little smaller and less elaborate than the landscaped in-ground with waterfalls and fire pits number that I had envisioned but Charlie didn't seem to mind. If you'd like one of your own you can round up those lost coins from your couch and get one for $7.99 at Toys 'R Us.

We had a few summers with store-bought kiddie pools when we were growing up but the absolute best "pool" was a 4' X 4' (I may be off on the dimensions--Dad, help me out here) steel stock tank. Jealous? You should be. No, we didn't have cows. We didn't use it for an animal trough of any sort. There was a time I remember though when it was filled with catfish. I have no idea why. Again, that's a question for my dad. We didn't swim with the catfish though. That would've just been silly. To my recollection we really did just mainly use it to "swim" in. Let's not forget that there are five kids in our family. I swear I have pictures of at least the four oldest plus my mom in it at one time. What? I'm from the country. Come on, like you didn't know. If I can find a picture of us in that cow tank I'll scan it and post it (if you're a sibling and have a pic you should email it to me!). Anyway, we used to make some mean whirlpools in that thing. I tried to teach Charlie the whirlpool basics today but he just didn't get it. Ahhh...good times.

I guess I've been thinking about my childhood a lot lately because I'm reading Nicholas Sparks' book Three Weeks with my Brother. He talks about their childhood and the crazy adventures they had. Not that my childhood was too crazy but when I think back sometimes I just really laugh. I may have to start a series of posts dedicated to these things.

For now though, I want to know if anyone else out there swam in a steel cow/horse tank. If not, tell me something funny about your childhood!

I love to read your post! You are a great writer. I have tons of fun memories from my crazy family. Back in the good ol' days before required seat belts and car seats my dad cut out a piece of plywood and put it in the back seat of our 1971 Chevy Impala (that 50 people could have ridden in) with blankets, sheets, and pillows so my sister and I could sleep on our road trips to Mississippi to visit my mom's family!

We were great at making whirlpools! I got the worst sunburns of my life from swimming in that tank. Those were the days!

"Three Weeks with my Brother" is a great book - I'm a big Nicholas Sparks fan. And I love that first picture of Charlie soaking up the sun in his pool! :)

Seriously...we had one...about the same size...maybe a tad bigger. It was at my grandparents and we same in it all the time. Papaw even had a bucket where we had to wash our feet off before getting in it. When the cousins came we had the best whirlpools and we would go around it like 100 times and then pick up our feet and let the water carry us around another 100 times.

Oh, the memories. Thanks for jogging that one up.
