Civic DutyLast night Andy and I put Charlie in the stroller and went down the street to the elementary school cafeteria to a meeting of our neighborhood association. I didn't even know we had an association, but since Andy and I routinely live our lives like 50-year-olds we though it would be good to show up. Yes, we were by far the youngest ones there. They had cookies and lemonade so it turned out to be worth the trip. Other than that there was lots of, "I don't know why the police don't..." and "We should look out for each other as neighbors...." Anyway, it was actually nice to meet some new folks and they had a good time smiling at Charlie so it was an overall satisfying experience. The amazing sunset for the walk home didn't hurt either! All this safety stuff got me thinking though. I decided to take inventory of our home's safety and it came up ridiculously short! We have one smoke detector in our house and I discovered this morning that the battery was disconnected. We don't have a carbon monoxide detector or locks on our gates. This just all makes me feel gross and guilty. So, Charlie and I took a trip to Home Depot this morning and remedied the situation. I'm going to put my handy skills to work today and install several new smoke alarms, a carbon monoxide detector & locks. Impressed? Me too. I'll let you know if I pull it off. So, I'd like to know...is your home up-to-date on the safety stuff or are we the only slackers?
Other things...
1. I can't figure our why Melinda on American Idol has no neck. Do we really want an Idol without a neck?
2. There's a show on VH1 called The Agency and one of the agents is this British woman who cusses like a sailor (they bleep it) and says all sorts of mean things that I don't understand. For some reason foul language in a British accent is funny.
3. I just finished reading the book Friday Night Lights and now I'm going to read Pride and Prejudice. While it's great that I love to read, it's a little sad that my book choices are based on tv shows/movies that I really like.
4. I really want to see the move Reign Over Me with Adam Sandler & Don Cheedle. I have great hopes for this movie.
5. Charlie LOVES music and anything resembling it. He claps and dances to music on the radio, tv, someone singing down the hall, etc. He also claps when anyone else claps, even when it's just the Oprah audience. It really makes me laugh and smile.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who has noticed Melinda's lack of neck. I like her a lot but can't get over how wierd she looks.
If anyone wants to break into my house, they'd have no problem at all. I keep telling Jason that we need to replace our flip deadbolts with double-key deadbolts, but he's very unconcerned. Most men don't understand the fear that women live with every day of being attacked. Jason only understands the fear of his xbox 360 or super gaming computer being stolen, but that's obviously not enough to make him spend $20 on new locks right now.
I watched an Opera a couple of years ago and got really paranoid too so I went out and bought a carbon manoxide detector. Thankfully our house came with smoke detectors in each room. My sister is super paranoid and got us those alarms you put on the windows so if someone tried to come in and take your children while you are asleep it will sound. They still are in our closet and I haven't installed them yet. I figure they can be used for sneaking out teenagers too :)!! We just put locks on our gates last week. I cannot imagine the guilt I would feel if something happened to my children in our own house.
Good post! Way to be part of your community!
Hey-
I've been thinking about you lately, friend, because next month I get to spend four fun-filled days in.... La Grange! I'm teaching part-time at a Lutheran school this year and apparently there is a Lutheran camp there in good ol' La Grange (Camp Lone Star, I think). Apparently I have "Sucker" written on my forehead because I agreed to help sponser the 6th grade camping trip this year.
Oh, and regarding your post... You think you all are dorks? Brett and I have both had serious thoughts about him being on the Board of our neighborhood association. When did we get so old?!
That Charlie is a cutie!
Jenny
Hey Jennie!! I can't believe you're going to LG! Good ol' Camp Lonestar--it's in a beautiful place on top of "the bluff" as us townies call it. Last time I was there (in high school!) they had some great ropes course stuff. You should make a trip down to the square and go to some of the cute shops. If you get a chance go to Prause's Meatmarket for lunch and get the baked potato potato salad, sliced brisket (no sauce!) and sausage. Then you've had the true LG experience. If you need anything while you're there look my folks up in the phone book--Chuck & Karen--they'd be happy to help!
I don't know if we have a neighborhood association, but I'd be dorky and want to go, too! Plus, it would get me out of the house!!
I had not noticed Melinda had no neck, but she's so my favorite. I hope the "no neck" thing doesn't ruin it for me. :)
Dustin does all of our home safety. We only have 1 smoke detector, but we do have locks on our gates and a carbon monoxide detector. We really need to replace our front door and the locks, though.
I love all your randon comments! So, did you enjoy Friday Night Lights? Was it an easy read?
I will not tell Cody about the smoke alarms. He checks ours once a month. I will tell him to call you next time. He has even taught Carley how to check them.
We may have you beat. Jason is a member of the Farmers Branch Historical Society and has the pin to prove it! Crazy!
Okay, I just did a count of fire alarms/smoke detectors in our house and we only have one! Now I'm totally paranoid! I may be making a run to Home Depot as well.
I just got done commenting on my blog about Jake and music. We've ot to get these kids together. I bet they could really cut a rug!
