Wow--I just wrote a really long post and then nearly fell asleep myself while reading it because it was so boring. So, I'm trying this again and hopefully it's better. FAS #4:
This morning we helped out with a church garage sale and I made the mistake of pointing out several boxes of National Geographic magazines to Andy. Now, for those of you who have been to our house you already understand my mistake. For those who have not, let me explain. Andy has every NG since the year he was born, not to mention a fairly complete set dating back to the '50s. They are housed in two floor-to-ceiling bookcases in "our" (Andy's) study. At first I liked the magazines--I mean, who doesn't like NG? But it's pretty out of control now. Andy has since acquired at least five (the ones I see stacked in OUR BEDROOM CLOSET!) more boxes plus however many he has stashed in the attic (which I learned about today!). The crazy thing is, all the NGs "stored" away are duplicates as are the ones that he brought home from the sale today. Now, I'm not a wife who nags (give me some time and some toddlers & I might get there), but I have made it clear that I disapprove of the duplicates. However, I was somewhat excited for the find today because although the magazine were duplicates, they came with the coveted leatherbound boxes in which to store and display them! You should have seen Andy's face when I showed him--it was what I imagine it might look like if someday I were to have dinner and a clean house waiting for him when he comes home from work!
Ok, here's the best part--to fully explain this joy and his affection for his NGs and other MANY books in his study you have to hear what he told me the other day. I cleaned the whole house and the last domain was his study which I would normally leave for him to clean. I wanted to do something nice for him and I knew this would be a good way to do it so I cleaned his study. When he came home that day he walked in the front door, caught a glimpse of the clean study out of the corner of his eye and nearly teared up. He went in and sat down at his desk, spun his chair around with eyes closed, breathed a sigh of relief and said, "You don't know how much this means to me. When my study's clean, I can sit here and just feel like...like all my books are giving me a great big hug!" Wow! I love my husband!
More of our day:
After the garage sale we headed out to the Lubbock Children's Home fall festival because that's just what you do sometimes. They had a silent auction and we went in with Brook and Amanda to win a weekend in a cabin in Cloudcroft, NM. It's one of our favorite places on earth--a weekend in the mountains with snow falling all around!Just give me a blanket, a fireplace, and hot chocolate and I'm good to go. Considering it was 93 degrees today and I got sunburned, that mountain trip can't come soon enough! After the festival we stopped by Ken Peter's Auction to check out the goods (antiques) to be auctioned tomorrow. We've been there plenty of times now but haven't bought anything--we just like to "plan" what we'll buy. For one thing, we don't have room for anything and for another we're waiting to find out what we're having before we commit to any furniture (like a rusty old unsafe crib or something). Today Andy spotted two white corner cabinets/amoires and said, "Those would be great in a little girl's room." Woah! That sure made things seem real. Then he said, "We really should have gotten that cowboy blanket that was at the garage sale this morning." (We want to do a western room for a boy.) I repeat--we don't know what we're having yet! And he makes fun of me for being impatient!
On more thing--my gift to you--a PC version of the original Oregon Trail. Enjoy!!
