Animal Kingdom

About a month ago SNL aired an episode in which all they did was show their best spoof commercials. I loved it! One of my favorites was an advertisement for a law firm which sought to prosecute pet owners when their animals infringed on others' property or personal rights. The skit showed Chris Parnell using the bathroom in people's yards, jumping on people and making them drop their groceries, jumping on people's cars, and other things that I won't mention. The tag line was something like, "You wouldn't let a human get away with this, so why should a pet?"

Now, I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes, but I just have to make this post because of some recent events. The other morning I woke up to find my neighbor's two yappy dogs running around my backyard. When they saw me at the window they stood barking nonstop as if I was intruding on their space. If there was ever a time that I wanted to hurt an animal...! I just left them there and figured the neighbors would fetch them when they got home and they did. Since moving into this house I have seen no fewer than four different cats in my front or back yards. One of the neighbors even stopped by one day, and with a cat trailing behind explained that this was Milkshake the neighborhood cat that sort of roams around. Well, I know that I don't have any pets so it better not roam in my yard!

Why does this bother me? Because no, I don't think it's cute that your dog wants to jump on me to say "hi" or your cat wants to crawl on my head when I'm sitting on your couch. The thing is, we take great care in raising kids and teaching them to behave so why don't people invest the same effort into their pets that they consider family? Thanks to those of you who are responsible with your pets. Your effort is much appreciated.

I read your blog to my dog Ali. Ali thinks that your comments sound like a girl that we go to church with who has a similar stance on parenting. When can I wait for my autographed copy of "Growing Pets God's Way"? :)

Just Kidding. A cat was in my yard yesterday and I seriously wanted to throw rocks at it! :)

I like Ali--she does tricks and eats peanut butter. You know I'm not talking about your dog!

Come on people. . . Give cats a break. You know they don't smell as bad as dogs.

Funny Growing Pets God's Way comment Ash. I don't know who you could be talking about.

Ahhh...cats. April C., I agree with your statement about cats. They do smell less and are way less maintenance, but they act so arrogant and entitled! I don't like humans or pets with those traits. Although I must say the Stormy is a pretty good cat.
